Understanding Obesity

Obesity is a complex disease influenced by various factors, including genetics and lifestyle. It involves a combination of social, behavioural, cultural, physiological, metabolic, and genetic elements. Being overweight or obese significantly increases the risk of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea, respiratory problems, and certain cancers (endometrium, breast, prostate, and colon).

Programme Overview

The Sasolmed Weight Management Programme aims to assist with weight loss through a comprehensive assessment and exercise prescription by Kobus Verster Biokineticist.

What Does the Sasolmed Weight Management Programme Entail?

Once referred to us, a full assessment will be conducted to determine your suitability for the programme. This includes:

  • Online Lifestyle Questionnaire: To gather information about your daily habits and routines.
  • Validated Biometric Testing: Measurements of blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels, height, and weight (or BMI).
  • Fitness Assessment: Evaluation of waist-to-hip ratio, body fat percentage, flexibility, posture, and fitness levels.

This thorough assessment helps identify specific risk factors for metabolic syndrome and physical fitness for exercise. A comprehensive health status report with tailored recommendations for health improvement will be provided.

What to Expect

After the assessment, an individualised exercise programme will be created and managed by us. The programme includes:

  • One to Three One-on-One Consultations.
  • Nine Weekly Group Exercise Sessions.
  • Referral to a Dietician and/or Psychologist: Two consultations (initial assessment and follow-up), if necessary.

Cost and Coverage

The cost of the Sasolmed Weight Management Programme is covered by the Scheme’s weight management benefits. Claims will be paid at 100% of the Scheme Tariff. Please note that this excludes the cost of any visits to your PGP, investigations, or medication prescribed by a healthcare provider, in which case acute benefits will apply.
